2) Where is CWPRS situated and how it can be reached?

3) What is the mandate of CWPRS?
The mandate of CWPRS is given below.
Planning, organizing and undertaking specific research studies to evaluate, alter, modify or redesign the proposals and/ or to redefine the objectives therein relating to all phases of water resources development including water-borne transport, environmental aspects with particular emphasis on the requirements of hydraulic systems and the structures associated therewith
Carrying out basic/ fundamental research necessary to support specific/ applied research and/ or aimed at furtherance of knowledge relevant to the science and technology plans/ objects of the country, and thus to advance the frontiers of knowledge pertaining to water resources and related sciences
Rendering consultancy and/ or advisory services to the Central and State Governments as may be called upon from time to time
Disseminating research findings and building up of a technical data base in water resources; and
Promoting/ assisting research activities in States and other institutions concerned with water resources, as the premier national organisation in the area of research associated with water resources development, and carrying out training of research manpower.

5) Which are the major areas of expertise of CWPRS?
River training and flood control, hydraulic design of bridges, hydraulic analysis and prototype testing, design of hydroelectric structures, ports & harbours, waterways and coastal protection, mathematical modeling for coastal engineering, hydrometeorology, surface water hydraulics, water quality analysis, spillways and energy dissipaters, control structures and water conductor systems, sediment management, geotechnical engineering, modelling and analysis of structures, concrete technology, engineering seismology, vibration technology, geophysics, isotope hydrology, foundation engineering, concrete technology, reservoir competency, cooling water intakes, cooling pond efficiency, discharge of industrial effluents, hydraulic instrumentation, hydraulic machinery & cavitation and current meter calibration.
6) Who are the major clientele of CWPRS?
The major clientele of CWPRS include: Central Government Departments/Agencies, State Government Departments/ Agencies, State Research Institutes, Port Trusts/ State Port Organizations, Public/ private sector undertakings and Municipal Corporations, NTPC, NHPC, NPC, ONGC, IOCL etc.
7) Does CWPRS undertake consultancy works for Private clients?
Yes. CWPRS does undertake works for Private clients.
8) Does CWPRS undertake consultancy works for foreign countries?
Yes. CWPRS is recognised as the regional laboratory of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) since 1971. The institution, with inter-disciplinary approach in all its activities, is an agency that offers unique services to the country and ESCAP region.
9) What is the total sanctioned staff strength of CWPRS?
The total sanctioned staff strength of CWPRS, as of now, is 1,084. The Research Cadre, comprising a sanctioned strength of 315 Engineers and Scientists in various disciplines/categories, is supported by Technical, Auxiliary Technical, Administration, Accounts and Ancillary services.
10) How does CWPRS offer solutions to the research projects undertaken?
The solutions offered by CWPRS are based on investigations using physical/ mathematical models, field investigations coupled with desk studies, or a combination of these. CWPRS also collects prototype data on a variety of engineering, hydraulic and environmental parameters. Requirement of accurate and reliable instrumentation/ data acquisition/ control systems for physical model studies and prototype measurements are met by in-house developments.
11) What is the Infrastructure available with CWPRS?
CWPRS has a very big campus occupying an area of about 180 ha. The Research infrastructure available at the Research Station includes Campus-wide LAN, extensive Information and Communication Technology (ICT) facilities for Mathematical modelling and other Computational needs, Water re-circulation system for physical models, Remote Sensing Applications Centre, Library, Mechanical Workshop, Auditorium, Inspection Bungalow and Hostel etc.
12) What is the procedure followed by CWPRS while undertaking studies from clients?
The procedure for undertaking works from a project authority/ client is summarised in the six steps summarised below.
Step 1: Receipt of formal reference from the project authority to the Director, CWPRS detailing nature of the problem and scope of the proposed study
Step 2: Preparation of cost-estimate for the study/ work, on a no-profit no-loss basis, by subject matter expert(s) from CWPRS, detailing scope, duration, methodology, data requirement, etc.; and forwarding the cost-estimate to the project authority for formal approval
Step 3: On approval of the cost-estimate by the project authority, and depositing of full estimated amount, the work is taken up. In accordance with the agreed terms and conditions of the study, the requisite data will either be collected by CWPRS and/ or provided by the project authority.
Step 4: During actual conduct of the studies, the estimate is operated as per actual, and accounts maintained in accordance with Central Public Works Account code.
Step 5: On completion of the studies, a technical report is submitted to the project authority/ client.
Step 6: On clearing of all debits by the concerned departments, a completion report is sent to the client.
