Control structure and water conductor division is engaged in the hydraulic model studies on Power intakes, Hydraulic gates, tailrace channels etc. The division offers hydraulically efficient and economically viable solutions to various problems in the associated fields viz., assessment of hydrodynamic uplift and down pull, estimating air demand of gated outlets, flow conditions including formation of vortices in the reservoir in the vicinity of power intake and to observe pressure fluctuations in tailrace channel. The study of structures controlling and guiding high velocity flows include gates, tunnels and outlets.

Broad areas of expertise

  • Physical model studies to examine the design of Power Intake by observing possibility of formation of air entraining vortices in front of Power Intake for different Reservoir Water with Spillway operation in combination and observe general flow conditions in the vicinity of Spillway and accordingly suggest remedial measures to avoid undesirable flow conditions.
  • Physical model studies examine the design of Hydraulic gates, stop logs and bulk heads by determining the net hydrodynamic force coming on the gates at various percentage openings to assess the hoisting capacity and access the aeration needs downstream of gates under various operating conditions
  • Physical model studies to finalize the alignment and geometry of the tailrace channel including observation of flow conditions and velocities in the tail pool to prevent loss of head which in turn reduces the power generatio

Significant Contributions
