The division has four decades of expertise in solving need based site specific Rock Engineering problems arising out of Local Tectonic History, Geological Formation, Type of Structures to be built upon or within such formation and Interaction of Structures with surrounding rock mass.
The division carried out investigations for more than 200 sites for irrigation as well as Hydro, Thermal and Nuclear Power Projects covering around 14 States of India.

Broad areas of expertise

  • The major activities under rock mechanics discipline include estimation of physical and engineering properties of rock mass, characterization of rock masses, and assessment of in-situ stresses by using flat jack method, stress analysis of underground openings by FEM method, strengthening measures for rock masses.
  • Determining rock mass deformation modulus by conducting In-situ deformability tests. The deformability of the foundation could pose problems of differential settlement for dams/structures built on complex rock masses.
  • Design of support system for tunnels and large underground openings and the rock-support interaction depend on the rock mass modulus. In-situ deformability tests and Laboratory tests are carried out to determine rock mass deformation modulus.

                                                                              In-situ permeability test
                                                                              Flat Jack test apparatus
                                                                              ASTM 2000 KN machine
Borehole TV Camera (Make- MAE Italy)
                                                                              Lab Shear Test
