Current Meter Calibration (CMC) Division undertakes the work of calibration and performance testing of various types of water current meters used in hydrometry and oceanography. The work of calibration of current is carried out confirms to International Standards ISO 3455 and Indian Bureau of Standards IS 13371.

Areas of Specialization

  • Calibration of conventional rotating element viz. cup, propeller, pigmy cup, pigmy propeller etc. type current meters as per IS 13371/ ISO 3455.
  • Performance testing of non-rotating type viz. Electromagnetic, Acoustic Doppler Current Profile (ADCP), Contact free discharge radar type velocity measuring device.
  • Performance testing of Paddle wheel water current meters, direct velocity measuring sensor, self-recording type current meters.
  • Undertaking velocity measurement works at various gauging sites
  • Evaluation of drag force for various shape, size of  floating & submerge water bodies at several different condition viz. depth of submergence, angle, add on load etc.
  • Performance testing of radar type water level sensor.
  • Field study for Coastal Bathymetry Survey to measure the sea depth, data collection on the specified area and process survey data for the depth contours.
  • Weather Data Analysis of Barometric Pressure, Air Temperature, Relative Humidity, Wind Speed, Wind Direction and Rain Fall measured

Significant Contributions

Calibrated more than 5000 Nos. rotating element type current meters for Central Water Commission (CWC), State Water Resources Department, manufacturer etc.

  • Performance testing of more than 280 Nos. various type of velocity measuring devices viz. Aquatic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP), Electromagnetic, Paddle wheel, self-recording and direct velocity indicator type current meters with data analysis for CWC, WRD, PSU, Academics Institutes, manufacturer etc.
  • Evaluated drag force measurement on Wheeled Armed Platform (WhAP), Reef Monitoring Robot (CBOT), Advanced Armoured Platform (AAP) different size and shapes of Pontoons at various submergence levels, load add-ons with different speed of the Rating Trolley for in straight and cross flow condition for Vehicle Research Development Establishment (VRDE), DRDO, Ahmednagar, R&D(E), DRDO, Dighi and National Institute of Oceanography, Goa

                                                                              Current Meter Rating Trolley-Front View
                                                                              Current Meter Rating Trolley-Rear View

Current meter rating tank facility

The major components for calibration of water current meters are the straight open Rating Tank of uniform cross section and an electrically driven Rating Trolley. The Rating Tank & Rating Trolley was established in 1955 for testing of ship models as well as calibration of current meters. The tank is 228m long, 3.66m wide and 2.13m deep. The Rating Trolley run on two parallel rails accurately aligned. The overhead shrouded bus bar power supply, the servo drive controls the AC servomotor with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) for precise speed control in the speed range of 0.01m/s to 7.5 m/s on-board and remotely operated real time data acquisition and processing system using specially developed software with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Human Machine Interface (HMI).

Drag force measurement facility

Drag force measurement facility with load cell & real time data acquisition system is available on the Rating Trolley for various shape, size of floating & submerge water bodies at several different conditions viz. depth of submergence, angle, add on load etc.

Coastal Bathymetry Survey System

Coastal Bathymetry Survey Systems consisting of Single beam dual frequency Echo sounder, Global Navigation Satellite System, Heave Sensor, Data Acquisition & Processing System, Hydrographic Survey Software to measure sea depths & to plot depth contours.

Automatic Weather Stations

Automatic Weather Stations installed at Satpati near Palghar, Maharashtra & Nani Danti near Valsad, Gujarat for real time measurement of weather parameters viz., Barometric Pressure, Air Temperature, Relative Humidity, Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Rain Fall & reception at AWS Server in the CWPRS, for weather & climate condition monitoring.
