The Bridge Engineering Division was initially established with primary focus on road and railway bridges, as well as barrages. Further, the division has expanded its scope to encompass the emerging needs in the Thermal and Nuclear Power Sectors. Notably, it has undertaken projects related to cooling ponds, crucial for mitigating hot-water recirculation at reservoir intakes. The division has carried out more than 40 projects related to hydraulic design, site identification for raw water intake structures, and flood mitigation strategies. By integrating physical and mathematical models duly complemented by desk studies, it delivers innovative solutions tailored to the evolving demands in its mandated area of research.
Broad area of expertise
- Physical and numerical model studies for bridges/barrages
- 2-D mathematical studies for energy dissipation for low head barrages
- Morphological studies for identification of site for raw water intake structures and its hydraulic design
- River bank protection works
Significant Contributions
- Significant studies of the division includes Assessment of flow parameters for inland waterways in river Yamuna from Delhi to Allahabad, flood mitigation for Nandur-Madhyameshwar weir, Godavari and hydraulic model studies for barrages at Kamala river
- The division was also responsible for the flood level assessment of the Additional ghats construction along Godavari river, at Nashik, Maharashtra for Mahakumbh held during 2015
