Coastal Hydraulic Structures division is at the forefront of designing coastal structures that shape the very fabric of our coastlines, from majestic breakwaters to sturdy seawalls. With a focus on both major and minor ports, as well as coastal protection works, this division is dedicated to crafting solutions that stand the test of time. Through meticulous studies and cutting-edge techniques, coastal hydraulic structures are designed here that not only enhance port development but also safeguard our shores from erosion and the relentless forces of nature.
Using state-of-the-art physical modeling, such as wave flume studies, Coastal Hydraulic Hydraulic Structures division bring these structures to life, ensuring their efficacy and resilience in the face of even the most formidable waves. From breakwaters and groynes that guide ships safely into harbor to seawalls and offshore breakwaters that shield our coasts from erosion, our designs are as functional as they are awe-inspiring. Every structure designed in this division is a testament of CWPRS commitment to innovation and coastal resilience.
Broad areas of expertise
- Design of Coastal hydraulic Structures such as Breakwaters and Groynes
- Physical Modeling (Wave Flume Studies) for the development of Ports & Harbours
- Design of seawalls and offshore breakwaters
- Design of bank protection works for the protection of eroding coast.
Significant Contributions
Evolved the innovative methods of coastal protection such as
- Seawall with embedded steps in the armour for tourist beaches
- Geo-container/Geo-textile tubes for the protection works.
- Sand dunes restoration/ protection with sand-filled Geo-containers
- Steep slope stabilization techniques for estuarine bank
- Studies carried out for the utilization of steel slag materials in different coastal hydraulic structures.
- Design of seawall with embedded steps in the armour for the protection of the tourist beaches considering the aesthetics of the site at Kelwabeach,Maharashtra.
- Shore protection to combat inundation problems
- Soft Solutions: The nearshore berm with Geo-container constructed for the sustainable coastal protection works at Ullal, Mangalore under ADB project.
- The groynes field with Geo-textile tubes constructed for the coastal protection works at Devbag, Maharashtra
- Artificial Sand Dunes: The artificial sand dunes with sand filled geo-containers suggested were implemented as a pilot project at Chikhala, Palghar in Maharashtra.
- Offshore reef: The Offshore submerged reef constructed for the sustainable coastal protection works at Ullal, Mangalore under ADB sub-project. Wave flume studies for the offshore reef at Ullal, Mangalore.
CWPRS is having six wave flume/basin laboratories of different dimensions. These facilities are used for the confirmation of hydraulic stability of coastal structures. The trunk portion of breakwater will be tested in 2D wave flume and roundhead portion is tested in 3D wave basin. The following are the different sizes wave flumes available in CWPRS for conducting model studies as below
- Wave Flumes with Random Sea Wave generation and data acquisition system (DAS) facility
- 90m wave flume
- 120m wave flume
- Wave Flumes with Regular Wave Generation and DAS facility
- 40m wave flume
- 50m wave flume
- 75 m wave flume
