Vibration Technology Division has been actively engaged in providing project specific consultancy in the fields of Non- destructive testing for assessment of in-situ quality of massive civil structures such as, Dams, Power House, weir, aqueduct, barrages etc., Design of blasting pattern and monitoring of adverse effects of blasting operations during excavation of rock near important civil structures and vibration studies for assessment of structural safety of civil structures and power generation unit due to traffic and machine induced vibration. This division has provided research support to many important water resources projects, as well as to the issues related to Nuclear Power plants all over India.
Broad Area of Expertise:
- Qualitative assessment of Civil structures by using Non-destructive testing methods.
- Monitoring of vibration levels for structural safety assessment of Power House, Barrages, Road/Railway Bridges etc..
- Estimation of safe quantity explosive and monitoring of blast induced ground vibration during excavation of hard materials near important civil structures like dams, powerhouse, historical monuments etc..
- Estimation of dynamic properties of rock and concrete core samples by resonance frequency test methods.
Significant Contributions
- During excavation of hard rock underwater at JNPT, Mumbai, the blasting pattern was designed in such a way that the Elephanta Caves (Historical monuments) UNESCO recognized World Heritage structures have been safeguarded from the adverse effects of blasting operations. Adoption of controlled blasting methodology enabled to complete the entire excavation of about 1.75 MCM within the schedule.
- Controlled blast studies near Bhira dam, Maharashtra during excavation of extremely hard rock by blasting operations enabled the project authority to operate the 150 MW pumped storage unit successfully. The methodology adopted in controlled blasting ensured the safety of the existing tunnel as well as the earthen dam.
