The Hydraulic Analysis and Prototype Testing (HAPT) division has been involved in both applied research across a wide array of topics within water resource engineering, river engineering and hydroelectric power projects. The division handles broad spectrum of projects that encompasses the study of flood control structures, sediment dynamics in rivers, flushing of sediments from reservoirs, techniques for sediment control and exclusion, design of canals and associated structures, barrages, diversion works, bridges, river training methods, flood protection strategies, and also on the investigations into river morphology. The division has conducted an extensive range of research projects, incorporating both hydrological and hydraulic analyses. The division utilizes hybrid approach, combining physical models as well as with numerical modelling, desk studies and field measurements to carry out its research activities.
Broad areas of expertise
- Physical model studies (both rigid bed and movable bed) for barrages to finalize the layout and orientation, to optimize the waterway and energy dissipation arrangements, finalize river training measures like guide bunds and afflux bunds, spurs, levee and 2D flume model studies for discharging capacity and gate operation schedule
- Physical model studies for reservoir sluicing and flushing, optimization of layout (intake, spillway) for hydro-electric power projects with respect to effective sediment management, suggesting remedial measures for effective sediment removal from reservoirs and canals (silt excluder/ejector), alignment and orientation of head regulators
- Numerical studies using 1D and 2D hydrodynamic and sedimentation models for river aggradation / degradation, river training, reservoir sedimentation, reservoir sluicing / flushing
- Integrated hydrological and hydrodynamic model studies for flood estimation and routing, evolving flood protection measures, flood mapping
- Morphological studies of rivers using remote sensing and GIS techniques for estimating bank line changes and flood mapping
- Field Measurements for river and canal gauging, calibration and rating of hydraulic structures in rivers and canals
- Bathymetric survey of the reservoirs using single beam and multi-beam echo sounder to estimate sediment deposition and loss in the storage capacity
Significant Contributions
- HAPT division has done studies for more than 40 hydro-power projects (Kiru, Kwar and Pakal Dul H E Projects etc.,) in India and abroad providing sustainable sediment management strategies.
- The Division has played a pivotal role in offering technical insights to uphold India’s stance in international courts and arbitration proceedings, held for various projects (Baglihar, Kishenganga, Ratle, PakalDul) in Indus Valley.
- Significant studies across nation includes mathematical model studies for reservoir sedimentation for Lower Seti, Pakal Dul, Kholangchhu, Bhadbhut barrage, Hydraulic model studies for Hathnikund barrage for restoration of energy dissipation arrangement, Haryana and Integrated hydrological and hydraulic model studies for flood protection measures for Chiplun town, Maharashtra.
