River hydraulics division undertakes planning, organization and conduct of research in the wide spectrum of river engineering, hydraulics and water resources. The division carries out studies related to hydraulic model studies pertaining to bridges, barrages and appurtenant works, model studies for evolving river training measures and flood protection works. The division also undertakes river morphological analysis studies utilising remote sensing applications. The main objective of the division is to provide technical sound and economically viable solutions to various river valley projects pertaining to Central/ State/ private clients using a fusion of physical models, mathematical models, site inspection as well as remote sensing techniques.

Broad areas of expertise

  • Hydraulic model studies of bridges, barrages to finalise the location, orientation, adequacy of waterway, afflux, safe deck levels, scour level, foundation level, protection measures, etc.
  • River bank protection (Revetments, pitching), Allied river training works (spurs/ groynes, flood embranchements, guide / afflux bunds, etc), flood protection works using physical and mathematical models.
  • Desk /Morphological studies for long term changes of river plan form and bed levels and river training works.
  • Identification of location for Inland Navigation Terminals by assessing the long-term river behaviour, velocity and flow depth, and silting and dredging requirements.
  • Studies on the scheduling of gate operation vis-à-vis river regime.
