The Hydraulic Machinery, Cavitation and Instrumentation Division of CWPRS carries out experimental and research studies related to Hydraulic Machines and Flow in water conductor systems. Studies include performance evaluation of hydro power plants, Field investigations for flow measurement, Surge analysis of lift irrigation schemes, Model studies for verification of Hydraulic performance evaluation of pump intakes, Numerical studies for intake systems and hydro turbines, desk studies for development of hydraulic designs of pumping systems.
This division is also engaged in providing the instrumentation required for physical model study to facilitate measurement of hydraulic parameters such as water level, velocity, discharge, temperature, salinity, flow pattern, producing of tides and random sea waves, river flow etc. It also caters to the Data Acquisition System (DAS) required for measurement and control of hydraulic parameters in the model as well in the proto. Further, this division is carrying out Hydrographic Survey of reservoirs to evaluate the existing storage capacity of the reservoirs and deposition of silt.
There is a dedicated Pump House section which serves as a crucial hub within CWPRS, acting as the central axis for delivering water to facilitate carrying out scaled physical model studies of national/international projects handled by CWPRS. Furthermore, the Pump House section actively engages in client-sponsored projects focusing on “surge analysis of water conducting systems”, particularly for hydropower and lift irrigation schemes. Over 30 Nos. lift irrigation projects have been undertaken for the Government of Maharashtra, aimed at mitigating water hammer effects within the water conducting systems. These endeavour’s highlight our commitment to ensuring the stability and efficiency of water infrastructure crucial for sustainable development and resource management.

Gravimetric Calibration laboratory:
Gravimetric calibration facilities available conform to ISO 4185 for calibration of flow meters, testing of filters and ascertaining valve characteristics. The principle employed in the gravimetric calibration facility is to accurately weigh the quantum of water passing through the flow meter under calibration at constant flow rate in a precisely known interval of time. The ratio of weight to time is the primary measure of flow rate against which the flow element is calibrated.

Volumetric Calibration laboratory:
Volumetric calibration facilities available conform to ISO 8316 for performance testing of submersible pumps, calibration of flow meters, testing of filters, ascertaining valve characteristics. The principle employed in the volumetric calibration facility is collection of water in a known volume of tank and the time taken to fill the same. Echo sounder Read out unit with recorder
The echo sounder sensor is fixed in the boat with its sensor immersed in the water and is connected to read out unit which will show the water depth as the boat is moved in the reservoir area. These depth values displayed on the read out unit can also be recorded on the chart provided with the echosounder read out unit. This depth data along with GPS position data given by DGPS unit is recorded in the Laptop and through navigation software we can compute the present reservoir volume.
Telemetry Testing
Very large no of Automatic Weather Stations (AWS), Surface Water Stations, Ground Water Stations, etc are already being installed or in the process of installation by State and/or Central Implementing Agencies under National Hydrology Project(NHP). Telemetry Installations for GSM/GPRS communication mostly include Cable & Antenna. For maximum data reception availability, parameters such as cable faults, Voltage Standing Wave Ratio (VSWR), Impedance etc., are required to be checked for proper & efficient transmission and reception of data. For laboratory and Field testing of above mentioned Telemetry parameters, CWPRS developed Telemetry Testing Facility is useful for testing Telemetry installations installed under NHP as well as for all across India.
